How to access your PC remotely

To connect your PC remotely, you need to have a VPN Client installed in your laptop/PC. There are two VPN Clients Install one of the clients below.

  • OpenVPN
  • Cisco Anyconnect

Install OpenVPN Client (preferred - KIP VPN server)

  • Depends on your Windows version download
"openvpn-install-2.4.8-I602-Win7.exe (Win 7 lokale Kopie der Installationsdatei)" or
"openvpn-install-2.4.8-I602-Win10.exe (Win 10 lokale Kopie der Installationsdatei)" and install it.
  • Download the zip file of the configuration files, unzip, copy or move the files to "C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config". We have been reported, that it sometimes only work if you place the files in "C:\Users\[USER]\OpenVPN\config" with [USER] replaced by your local username.
  • Click on "OpenVPN-GUI" in the start menu, you can see an openVPN icon in the system tray(right bottom corner). Right click on the icon, click on "Connect"
  • Login with kip username & password. Now you are in the KIP network.

Install Cisco Anyconnect VPN Client (URZ VPN Server)

  • Double click to install, once done, open Cisco AnyConnect Client
  • Choose the server "Uni Heidelberg-vpnsrv1" (vpnsrv1.urz.uni-heidelberg.de) then click on "Connect". vpnsrv0 is also possible. Both share now the same IP-range.
User name: kipusername@kip.uni-heidelberg.de (not your email-id)
 Password : your KIP Password
  • Click on "Accept"

Now you are in the KIP network & the next step is to establish the connection remotely.

Remote Desktop Connection

  • Hold "windows button" and hit "s", search for Remote Desktop Connection & Click
  • Enter your computer name, for example "xyz-pc", click on "Connect"
  • Enter your user name & password that you used to login into your PC (not your kip username/password)
  • Click on Connect
