How to access your PC remotely
To connect your PC remotely, you need to have a VPN Client installed in your laptop/PC. There are two VPN Clients Install one of the clients below.
- OpenVPN
- Cisco AnyConnect / Secure Client
Install OpenVPN Client (a VPN server of KIP)
- Goto "http://portal.kip.uni-heidelberg.de/kipvpn" and login with your KIP-Account
- Depends on your Windows version download
"openvpn-install-2.4.8-I602-Win7.exe (Win 7 lokale Kopie der Installationsdatei)" or "openvpn-install-2.4.8-I602-Win10.exe (Win 10 lokale Kopie der Installationsdatei)" and install it.
- Download the zip file of the configuration files, unzip, copy or move the files to "C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config". We have been reported, that it sometimes only work if you place the files in "C:\Users\[USER]\OpenVPN\config" with [USER] replaced by your local username.
- Click on "OpenVPN-GUI" in the start menu, you can see an openVPN icon in the system tray(right bottom corner). Right click on the icon, click on "Connect"
- Login with kip username & password. Now you are in the KIP network.
Install Cisco AnyConnect / Secure Client VPN Client (universities VPN system offered by URZ)
- Download Cisco VPN Client from URZ with your Uni-ID (e. g. xx000) and setup your time based Token (TOTP)
- Install and open Cisco VPN Client
- Choose the server "vpn-ac.uni-heidelberg.de (or "Uni Heidelberg-vpnsrv1" (vpnsrv1.urz.uni-heidelberg.de) or vpnsrv0) then click on "Connect".
User name: <Uni-ID>@vpn-kip.uni-heidelberg.de Password : your Uni-ID Password
(<Uni-ID> is your Universities ID -> two characters and three numbers, so the user name will be something like xx000@vpn-kip.uni-heidelberg.de)
- Now you'll be asked for the time based one-time-password (TOTP)
- Click on "Accept"
Now you are in the KIP network & the next step is to establish the romote connection to a PC.

Enable the Remote Desktop Server on a Windows 10 PC
To enable the possibility to establish a Remote Desktop Connection to your PC you have to enable Remotedesktop in the control pannel. To do this search for "Remote Desktop Settings" (Remotedesktopeinstellungen) in the search box and turn "Enable Remote Desktop" to on ("Remotedesktop aktivieren" -> "Ein").
Remote Desktop Connection
- Hold "windows button" and hit "s", search for Remote Desktop Connection & Click
- Enter your computer name followed by the domain name of KIP, e. g. "xyz-pc.kip.uni-heidelberg.de", click on "Connect"
- Enter your user name & password that you normaly use to login into this PC (often not your kip username/password)
- Click on Connect
Now you can start working remotly from home!
Remote connection without VPN
- Install x2goclient
- create a new profile with
Host: portal1.kip.uni-heidelberg.de ( or portal2.kip.uni-heidelberg.de ) Login: [your KIP-account] SSH-Port: 22 Sitzungsart: Verbindung mit Windows-Terminalserver herstellen Server: [your PC]
- if connection is not possible, please login to https://portal.kip.uni-heidelberg.de ; write down the IP-address shown in the right column and send it to edv@kip.uni-heidelberg.de
